"Gold Stars": A Poem About Lesbian Stereotypes

this is who we are: the stone butches no glitter or sparkles & we listen to ani difranco & drive subarus. fuck the razor, but hold onto it for my pixie cut & we don't know queerness until we try it out but it seems you don't either. butch or femme? pick! where are my doc martens? they'll look twice when we have cats and tofu but they all know we are too busy sleeping around, man hating and living sinfully. we are dykes on bikes, drugged up on the l word and melissa etheridge and gaga. bare faced women walking dude-like in plaid and cargo shorts and key rings. but we must have been abused-- oh, no? well then it's penis envy. i will call you when i'm done with my softball game but if i have an appointment converting a straight girl, then it will have to wait until i graduate from smith...we're moving in on the second date, right? "Love Revived" A Christian Apology to the LGBT Community

05:00
Love Revived is a spoken word piece by John Wesley Reid The intent of this video is to bring a message of restoration of Christ's example of love to the LGBT Community! Video Produced By: http://mwendo.co/ Visit John's blog at http://johnreidblogs.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jwtweets85 Facebook: https://facebook.com/john.w.reid.75 Instagram: http://instagram.com/jwsnaps85 Email: jwspeaks777@gmail.com Lyrics: If you have been hurt by a Christian, I'm sorry If you have been made to feel worthless, I'm sorry If your heart burns inside from what somebody said of the orientation of life that you've lead If you feel like your desire to be loved has no place and your church and your friends have failed to embrace or identify you, too, as one who needs grace, I'm sorry Some of you may be jaded by some Christian figure who didn't seek you in love but merely to cure as if to objectify you and tell you to learn to go and live like a saint or else you'll just burn You see it's teachings like that which Christ didn't condone but rather challenged those accusing to cast the first stone 'cause if they're not teaching in love then they're standing alone in trying to orchestrate themselves what only Christ can atone Now I love the church and it's institution  and the way that God has so powerfully used them to reach out our communities and out to the nations but I am also aware of our past abrasions Please understand that we are just as depraved as the next sinner who God so lovingly saved and accept our apology for the way we've behaved and let us love on you the way that Christ would convey I wish I could stand here and say that your past is some kind of a mix up and we could take back this hateful demeanor we displayed but the fact is there's still perversion out there like Westboro Baptist Know this...the true body of Christ knows that Westboro's corrupted You tell me Fred Phelps never lied, cheated or lusted But he'll hold up his signs and talk of God's hate by misinterpreting scripture he helps formulate the plan of the enemy to come decimate the truth of God's love that the real church demonstrates I hate it when I see Westboro convene  But I love it when the Patriot Guard intervenes You see I feel your pain too when their picketing's seen having served, myself, as a U.S. Marine You see they disrespect those who died so we can be free Saying God laughs at their death but what they don't see is that it was Westboro's sin that put Christ on the tree Indeed sacrifice seems more Christlike to me This image of a hateful homophobic facade surely isn't my loving God Now I affirm the accuracy of God's revelation I affirm inerrancy and divine inspiration  and the scriptures are clear that same-sex relations are contrary to his intent for Creation.  But I also know that I have sin too and whether you're gay or straight the gospel's still true and he can restore a hurting broken view into a new and beautiful design like you   I've been lost, I've lied, I've slandered, I've hurt I've taken God's name and treated it like dirt lust, deceit, greed from wealth all of these things I am guilty of  myself I have sin...but I've been redeemed Let me tell you about Jesus and his love for you Are you free from the sin that once held you condemned  Do you feel like your soul is unclean Because I know of a cross that has been blood stained to ensure that your royalty's seen I know of a hill that once bore naked a man who loved those who'd forsake him enough to bare their sins and take them  from condemnation to sanctification You see this man of love who while nailed to a tree had his children in mind and he begged this one plea that God the Father would show mercy  even on those of whom Christ's death were guilty He pardoned his deity to wander as least to live, love and die then be raised a high priest because of this image he invites us to feast he is a loving God not a Westboro beast that which the harlot wiped from Jesus' feet she then wore in her hair as a crown of defeat a defeat from dichotomies of pure and impure now vindicated by Christ because he loved her Now I pray that my message begins to take place and you can know the joy of this restoration this manifestation of Christ's affirmation was made for you as a new creation He loves you I love you the Church loves you

Eileen Myles Interview: A Poem Says 'I Want'

19:46
“I think a poem really is a statement of desire.” Meet the legendary American poet, writer – and homosexual icon – Eileen Myles. In this video, she discusses the innate power of poetry and how to address the absence of the female genitalia. Myles argues that ironically the word ‘pussy’ has become more political than ‘president’, as it “represents an assertion that female reality is a human reality”: “Whenever I’ve been someplace where Tampax is free – is part of what’s in the bathroom – I think, well, that’s a culture that’s acknowledging the human fact that women bleed, that menstruation is simply as real as toilet paper.” Removing basic things such as female sanitation is “violent and deeply political” – you’re rendering women invisible, just as women’s genitalia is invisible: “The pussy is abandoned. If I don’t say it, who will?” “There are so many ways in which my humanity has never been there, and that sends a really loud message.” Myles wants to normalise her position by “acting like it’s in the world, maybe even more than it’s in the world.” Rather than writing specifically about e.g. being a lesbian, she writes about the state of things as she experiences them. However, it’s also a requirement for her that her work is utopian: “What I get to do as an artist is start creating the world I want to live in.” It wasn’t until her twenties that Myles realised that writing poetry – to engage in the powerful “profane act” act of changing the order of words – was what she was supposed to do, and she describes becoming a poet as “a default position.” In continuation of this, she feels that poems contain a “cultural ability” and reflect the “evolving recipe of how to speak in a kind of American that is mine.” The words she uses – including swear-ing – echo all the places she’s been and defines who will listen and who won’t: “What excites me is to think that what I’m presenting is a lot of codes together.” Eileen Myles (b. 1949) is an American poet, novelist, performer and art journalist, who has produced several volumes of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, libretti, plays and performance pieces over the last three decades. Her publications include ‘Afterglow’ (a dog memoir) (2017), ‘Inferno: A Poet’s Novel’ (2010), ’Skies’ (2001), ’Cool for You’ (2000) and ‘Chelsea Girls’ (1994, 2015). In 2015 ‘I Must Be living Twice. New and Selected Poems 1975-2014’ was published. Myles has received a wide range of awards and fellowships such as four Lambda Book Awards, the Shelley Award (Poetry Society of America) (2010), a Guggenheim Fellowship (2012) and The Clark Prize for Excellence in Arts Writing (2015). In 1977 Myles co-edited the feminist an-thology ‘Ladies Museum’ and in 1979 she was a founding member of the Los Texans Collective. From 1984-1986 Myles was the artistic director of St. Mark’s Poetry Project. Myles has toured all over the world since the early 1980s. She lives in Marfa, Texas and New York City. There is No Hierarchy of Oppressions - by Audre Lorde (Read by Lauren Lyons)

03:34
There is No Hierarchy of Oppression - by Audre Lorde Read by: Lauren Lyons (@Laur_Ly) for GetInclusive.com Photo Source: PBS.org ----- "I was born Black, and a woman. I am trying to become the strongest person I can become to live the life I have been given and to help effect change toward a liveable future for this earth and for my children. As a Black, lesbian, feminist, socialist, poet, mother of two including one boy and a member of an interracial couple, I usually find myself part of some group in which the majority defines me as deviant, difficult, inferior or just plain "wrong." From my membership in all of these groups I have learned that oppression and the intolerance of difference come in all shapes and sexes and colors and sexualities; and that among those of us who share the goals of liberation and a workable future for our children, there can be no hierarchies of oppression. I have learned that sexism and heterosexism both arise from the same source as racism. "Oh," says a voice from the Black community, "but being Black is NORMAL!" Well, I and many Black people of my age can remember grimly the days when it didn't used to be! I simply do not believe that one aspect of myself can possibly profit from the oppression of any other part of my identity. I know that my people cannot possibly profit from the oppression of any other group which seeks the right to peaceful existence. Rather, we diminish ourselves by denying to others what we have shed blood to obtain for our children. And those children need to learn that they do not have to become like each other in order to work together for a future they will all share. Within the lesbian community I am Black, and within the Black community I am a lesbian. Any attack against Black people is a lesbian and gay issue, because I and thousands of other Black women are part of the lesbian community. Any attack against lesbians and gays is a Black issue, because thousands of lesbians and gay men are Black. There is no hierarchy of oppression. I cannot afford the luxury of fighting one form of oppression only. I cannot afford to believe that freedom from intolerance is the right of only one particular group. And I cannot afford to choose between the fronts upon which I must battle these forces of discrimination, wherever they appear to destroy me. And when they appear to destroy me, it will not be long before they appear to destroy you."

Adrienne Rich (1929-2012): The Life of the Legendary Poet & Activist

13:30
democracynow.org - The legendary poet, essayist and feminist Adrienne Rich, who died on Tuesday at the age of 82, was one of the most celebrated poets of the last half century and a lifelong advocate for women, gay and lesbian rights, peace and racial justice. Rich drew widespread acclaim for her many volumes of poetry and prose, which brought the oppression of women and lesbians into the public spotlight. She was a key figure in the women's movement and an uncompromising critic of the powerful. In 1997, Rich famously declined to accept the National Medal of Arts in a protest against the Clinton administration, writing that art "means nothing if it simply decorates the dinner table of power which holds it hostage." We remember Rich's life with Pulitzer Prize winning author Alice Walker and Rich's literary agent Frances Goldin. 5 poems by Audre Lorde

05:06
Audre Lorde 1934-1992 "When we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak".- Audre Lorde "Lorde writes as a Black woman, a mother, a daughter, a Lesbian, a feminist, a visionary; poems of elemental wildness and healing, nightmare and lucidity," wrote Adrienne Rich of Audre Lorde's 1976 collection of poems The Black Unicorn. Audre Lorde listened to her mother's stories of the West Indies growing up. Born February 18, 1934 in New York City, she was the youngest of three daughters of West Indian immigrants. At birth she was nearly legally blind and did not speak until she learned to read at four years of age. As a child, she did not like how the 'y' looked at the end of Audrey and so dropped it. She encountered racism at the Catholic schools she attended. St Mark's school was downright hostile, she later recalled. She began writing poetry in the eight grade as a form of rebellion, and published her first poem in Seventeen. After graduating Hunter College in 1959, she attended Columbia where she earned a masters degree in library science. She married and had two children with an attorney, Edward Rollins, but divorced in 1970. Her poetry was regularly published during the 1960s. During this time she became active in civil rights, anti-war, and feminist politics. She also was involved with gay culture in Greenwich Village, where she lived. In 1968, while she was writer-in-residence at Tougaloo College, Mississippi, she met Frances Clayton. They remained romantic partners until 1989. She had a brief affair with the sculptor Mildred Thompson in the late 70s, and was partnered with Gloria Joseph until her death. Warrior: She Who Makes Her Meaning Known, is the meaning of Gamba Adisa, the name Lorde took in an African naming ceremony before she died on November 17, 1992 after battling breast cancer for 14 years. My Testimony/Transparency- Overcoming Homosexuality/Lesbian Lifestyle

22:47
I share my testimony not only to approve God's will but to help and guide others (women or men) who are struggling, starting the process, and fighting homosexuality. I share my story and realization OPENLY and with TRANSPARENCY so that anyone who is or has been in my shoes can relate. Just know that you are not alone and that the journey is yours and no one else'. If it is a struggle for you, know that if you were the one and/or are the one to be bold about living a homosexual lifestyle then God will grant you that same boldness and courage to go through the transition of coming out of it with and THROUGH HIM. "Do not be conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Gods will is- His good, pleasing and perfect will." Keith Jarrett's 'Gay Poem' (Art Directors Mark Chaudoir & @rtjpoet

02:56
UK Slam winner Keith Jarrett, who does not consider himself a particularly gay poet, writes a 'Gay Poem' and initially rejects it - but slowly, they both come to accept how both sides of his creativity mirror each other.... produced by 'Utter!' Spoken Word. By Richard Tyrone Jones Comment is free hosts dozens of discussions on a wide range of subjects, including news, politics and culture, as well as personal perspectives on the way we live now. We wanted to explore different ways of expressing comment and so commissioned spoken word artists and poets to write and perform a bespoke piece with a comment angle. The first in the mini-series is the poet Hollie McNish. If you’re a spoken word artist or a poet, we’d love to hear from you. Since this is spoken word, we’d like to actually see and hear you, so please take a video of your performance. It doesn’t have to be professional – your words are what are important – but please make sure, if you’re filming with your phone, the sound is okay. Please keep the video to under three minutes. We will feature your best performances on Comment is Free. Black Bisexual Poet Yazmin Monet Watkins - Episode 204 (part 3 of 4)

05:44
In this segment of episode 204 of NoMoreDownLow.TV, we feature bisexual poet & spoken word artist Yazmin Monet Watkins. She talks about her journey and her new book "Love Without Limits -- The Bi-Laws of Love." Watch the full episode 204 now at http://youtu.be/5DcQQPyX6GU ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Check out more episodes of our show at http://www.NoMoreDownLow.TV Find us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/NoMoreDownLow Subscribe to us on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/NoMoreDownLow ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TRANSCRIPT Internationally renowned poet and spoken word artist Yazmin Monet Watkins explores her journey through bisexuality, religion, heartbreak and healing in her new book "Love Without Limits -- The Bi-Laws of Love." Yazmin: "It's kind of a journey and it's all my life on some level. And there are stories that I hope other people can share and can relate to, especially in the bi-community because there are poems about my relationships with men, and with women." Janora McDuffie, NoMoreDownLow.TV co-host: "We hear about lesbians, we hear about gays, but that letter "B", seems to be a big old question mark. Some people don't even believe bisexuality exists." Yazmin: "I'm okay with falling in love with either a man or a woman or perhaps somewhere in between... I'm able to love freely without limitations and I'm really glad that this book expresses that too." Janora: "What would you say to the person who says that you're just confused and you're really gay, or someone says you're just really greedy & promiscuous?" Yazmin: "You know I've heard it all, those with others as well. I've had experiences in the straight community and the gay community where it's been like, you have to choose one or the other, you're selling out by going this way, being okay with who I love whether it's a man or a woman." Writing and performing her work on stages around the world is Yazmin's life calling. The twenty-something, San Diego native has toured and opened for recording artists Les Nubians and competed in National Poetry Slams in Cambridge, Massachusetts. And at her recent book release party at a packed West Hollywood hot spot, Yazmin gave the audience a real treat when she performed poems from her newly published works. Yazmin: "So, I think I'll start out with a poem, you guys all right with that? This is the title poem, love and war." And in the audience to cheer her o was Yazmin's mother Diane, who admits that coming to terms with her daughter's truth was a bit of a challenge at first. Yazmin's Mom: "It was a process of exploration for me as well." Janora: "Why do you think there aren't more women of color brave enough to tell their stories?" I don't want to think that it's the church...I think with the black community the church is a staple and an experience." Yazmin: "I'm doing my own thing, so your opinion of that doesn't affect that at all and I'm okay with that."

The Teenager Behind The Women's March's 'Nasty Woman' Poem

06:32
Nina Donovan is a 19-year-old poet who recently penned the explosive “Nasty Woman” poem performed by actress, and activist, Ashley Judd at the Women’s March in Washington DC. The poem takes on everything from women's rights, to immigration issues, to racial equality under the new Trump Administration. The piece has quickly gained international attention while also sparking widespread controversy for suggesting incestuous relations between President Trump and his daughter, Ivanka Trump. Broadly met up with Donovan in her hometown of Franklin, Tennessee to talk about the inspiration behind this momentous poem, and how it's become somewhat of a rallying cry for the feminist movement under President Trump.
