What is Estate Planning in Georgia? | Estate Planning Attorney | Atlanta LGBT Lawyer | LGBT Attorney

02:30
Contact http://www.scriberlaw.com/ or call (404) 939-7562 http://www.scriberlaw.com/estate-planning/exactly-estate-planning-georgia/ Transcript: Estate planning is the act of ensuring your wishes regarding your property and your body are carried out if you become disabled or die. To do this, our firm prepares the legal instructions that allow you to decide who receives your property, decide who will care for you if you are unable to manage your own affairs, and decide who will care for any children you have under the age of 18 or have special needs. To goal is to do this while minimizing taxes, legal fees, and court costs. We think of estate planning as a three-step process. The first part of estate planning is organization of the client’s wealth and assets. This means finding and reviewing the client’s accounts and property as well as learning about the client’s goals and needs. The second step is putting together a plan to strategy to protect the client’s assets while they are still alive. The final next step of estate planning is to plan for what will happen to those assets upon the client’s death. At this point, the question then becomes to whom do they want to have those assets given to and also to see how it can minimize tax issues, estate fighting issues and even procedural probate issues. At the same time, we also deal with issues that are more important than property, like figuring out who is going to get custody of children under the age of eighteen if both parents die. If someone has pets, who is going to take care of them? Additionally, we help the client provide instructions to their loved ones about what to do with their body. As part of this process, we need deal with insurance policies, retirement accounts, annuities, et cetera and make sure those support the client’s goals. Estate plans can dramatically vary in complexity. One person might need just a Last Will and Testament as well as a few other documents. Other people might need to design a multigenerational trust, put together a plan to deal with estate taxation, or explore aggressive asset protection strategies, all of which can be significantly more complex. Estate planning is the term that is broad enough to encompass all of this. About Stephen Scriber: Stephen Scriber, a graduate of Duke University School of Law, is an experienced wills, trusts, and estate planning practitioner, with offices in Marietta and Midtown Atlanta. How Long Will My Probate Case Take? | Atlanta Probate Lawyer | LGBT Lawyer | Scriber Law Group

01:40
Contact http://www.scriberlaw.com/ or call (404) 939-7562 http://www.scriberlaw.com/probate/ {TRANSCRIPT} This is another extremely important question. A lawyer that can’t answer this question, or that hems and haws at the answer, is avoiding the question. Obviously, nobody knows exactly how long a case will take to conclude. There are just too many unknowns during an initial consultation, not the least of which are: how will your other parties to the probate will act, whether potential parties are represented, how crowded the court docket is, et cetera. However, while we can’t make any guarantees about how long a case will take, we can tell the client what we expect to happen and the speed at which we will make our filings during the case. For example, I tell potential clients that I will gather the necessary information and be able to proceed on their matter within days. Once I know, I can give clients a predictable timeline for their case. An uncontested Will can be finished in one day. An uncontested probate matter where there is no Will generally takes two to three months, depending on the court. A contested estate will often take months or years to resolve. Once I understand the facts of your case, I will be able to provide an answer specific to your case. DC BLACK PRIDE FESTIVAL 2011

08:42
The D.C. Black Pride Festival is a social, educational, and fundraising festival originating in the African-American lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community of Washington, D.C. The central mission of the festival is to raise awareness of and pride in black lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders and to support organizations fighting HIV/AIDS and other health issues. The event serves as the model for numerous black pride festivals held throughout the United States. Held each year since 1991 on the long Memorial Day weekend, the D.C. Black Pride Festival draws about 25,000 to the Washington Convention Center, where displays include a health and wellness fair, as well as specialty merchandise and food vendors. In addition to activities centered in the exhibition hall, entertainment and social events extend throughout the preceding week. Included are a town hall meeting on the state of black gay men's health, workshops on various lifestyle topics, a basketball tournament, and worship services. A fashion show, film festival, comedy showcase, and poetry slam are among the entertainment offerings, and a pageant is held to select Mr. and Ms. D.C. Black Pride. Throughout the festival, various social events offer music, dancing, and refreshments. Sampson takes us on a couple stops around the Washington, DC area during the 2011 Black Pride festival. Enjoy!!! Taking Action for Dignity and Respect

03:52
Solutions Not Punishment led a successful action after a trans man was pulled over by the East Point Police and harassed, threatened with a genital search to "determine" his gender, and wrongfully arrested because he was trans*. The LGBT community of the Atlanta Metro Area joined with national organizations and concerned East Point residents to condemn this transphobia and demand an apology and changes to the Department's policies and procedures regarding trans and gender non-conorming people. After a 2 hour rally and protest, SNaP Co received an official apology from the Mayor and Police Chief and a commitment from the city to implement new policies and provide training for all its employees that deal with the public.

We Stand Together with the LGBT Community as One

02:38
In Orlando, a terrorist walks into a nightclub and murders nearly 50 human beings. Sons and daughters, brothers and sisters cut down in cold blood. They did nothing wrong. They were dancing with friends, they were enjoying music with loved ones. Why did the terrorist murder them? Because he was driven by a fanatical hatred. He targeted the LGBT community because he believed they were evil. Now, the murderer wasn't alone. Regimes and terrorist organizations around the world ruthlessly persecute the LGBT community. In Syria, ISIS throws gays off rooftops. In Iran, the regime hangs gays from cranes. Too many people have remained silent in the face of this awful persecution. This week's shooting wasn't merely an attack on the LGBT community. It was an attack on all of us, on our common values of freedom and diversity and choice. Radical Islamist terror makes no distinction between shades of infidel. This week it was gays in Orlando. A few days before that it was Jews in Tel Aviv. Before that it was music fans in Paris; Travelers in Brussels; Yazidis in Iraq; Community workers in San Bernardino; Christians and journalists in Syria. All of us are targets. We believe that all people are created in the image of God. ISIS, by contrast, believes that all people who aren't just like them deserve to die. We will not be terrified into submission. We will fight back. And we will triumph. Today I ask you to reach out to friends in the LGBT community. Comfort them. Tell them you stand together, we stand together as one. And that you will always remember the victims. Tell them they will never be alone, that we are all one family deserving of dignity, deserving of life. I have no doubt that those who seek to spread hate and fear will be defeated. Working together we will defeat them even faster. We need to stand united, resolute in the belief that all people regardless of their sexual orientation, regardless of their race, regardless of their ethnicity, all people deserve respect, deserve dignity.

The Atlanta Rainbow Crosswalks: A look back... (part 2)

00:34
Just a reminder of what was accomplished! Thank you again to all who donated to this wonderful historic project. The torch has now been passed to city of Atlanta officials and I hope they realize the importance of the Atlanta Rainbow Crosswalks. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Atlanta Rainbow Crosswalks is the brainchild of Robert Sepulveda Jr., an Interior Designer/Activist based out of Atlanta, Ga. He originally contacted the City of Atlanta in August of 2014, with the proposal of installing The Rainbow Crosswalks at the 10th St. & Piedmont Ave. location. The journey of this project was been filled with many joyous moments of progress, as well as moments when I thought we couldn't go any further. Navigating city bureaucracy and red tape can be an overwhelmingly daunting feat to accomplish; paperwork to file, meetings to attend, departments to be approved by and weeks of hearing nothing back. I originally contacted the City of Atlanta in August 2014, with a proposal about installing The Rainbow Crosswalks at the 10th St. & Piedmont Ave location in Midtown before PRIDE 2014. The 10th St. & Piedmont Ave. intersection has long been the epicenter of the LGBT community with pioneering LGBT business such as the notable Out Write bookstore and coffeehouse that was established in 1993, being the first LGBT bookstore in the city of Atlanta. Not only does the PRIDE Parade route pass over the 10th St. and Piedmont Ave crosswalks, but the most high-profile LGBT locality in Atlanta is Midtown. Also, Atlanta is home to one of the highest LGBT populations per capita, which is third among major US cities behind San Francisco and Seattle. 12.8% of Atlanta's city population identifies themselves as LGBT. Atlanta joined a group of world cities that have already implemented these crosswalks in places such as; Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, Austin, Philadelphia, West Hollywood, Seattle, Northampton Massachusetts, as well as international cities such as; Toronto, Vancouver, Sydney and Tele Aviv. These crossings have demonstrated significant economic, social and cultural benefits. Most importantly, the symbolic crossing will positively promote Atlanta with expected benefits for tourism and retail activity in the area. Also, Atlanta’s Pride festival, being the largest in the South East is expected to draw upwards of 300,000 participants to Atlanta. The crosswalks themselves brought a feeling of unity and awareness of human rights through public art and the foundation built around, The Atlanta Rainbow Crosswalks, Inc. ( A 501 (3)(c) nonprofit reached deep into the Atlanta community. The mission behind these crosswalks was for everyone to know, whether they are just coming out, closeted, bi, trans, having difficulty accepting themselves; whether they are too afraid to share who they really are or to afraid be who they really want to be; those that family members disowned or shunned; and like many of us that have faced discrimination because of who we love and how we were born, that yes, you are welcome here, you are safe here and you will be treated with respect and dignity and the City of Atlanta itself stands beside you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total raised: $44,911.00 The total cost was $21,617.86 and group refunded $7,500. $16,358.41 went to seven local organizations. Georgia Equality: $3,180.80 Lost-n-Found Youth: $3,180.80 Piedmont Park|Piedmont Park Conservancy: $1817.60 Living Room: $2,726.40 Out on Film: $2,726.40 PAWS Atlanta: $1363.20 St. Mark’s United Methodist Church: $1,363.20 To advance the awareness of diversity and equality through public art and community outreach. Longtime Atlanta LGBT community activist Jesse Peel, June 18, 2014, Emory Libraries

29:22
On April 8, 2014, longtime Atlanta LGBT community activist Jesse Peel was the guest in the Atlanta Intersections series at Emory University's Robert W. Woodruff Library. Randy Gue, curator of modern political and historical collections at Emory's Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library (MARBL), directs the series and conversations. Peel, who was instrumental in building local organizations to support people with HIV/AIDS and their families as the epidemic gained momentum in the early 1980s, donated his papers to MARBL in August 2012 as the library began assembling a dedicated LGBT collection. "Jesse Peel had a front-row seat when the AIDS crisis arrived in Atlanta, and he has inspiring stories to share," Gue says. "He talks about how the LGBT community had to develop its own support, invent its own organizations, and provide its own services because there were no services available to respond to the epidemic."

Because of this, I have five tips for LGBT families with young children to follow: Decide who will take care of your children if an unexpected tragedy occurs. This is particularly true if there is only one parent on the child’s birth certificate or the second parent adoption has not been completed. Decide on an emergency plan in case both parents have an tragedy during the school day. Consider how you will pay for your child's education especially college if tragedy were to strike. On average, the LGBT families have lower income and accumulated wealth than more traditional families. Part of the way to fix this gap is to leave a legacy to leave your children. Is there wealth that you can leave to your spouse or partner? An estate planning attorney is a valuable partner in planning and getting the team together to build your families wealth. And finally, consider the values and traditions that you want to have preserved if you are unable to raise your child yourself. The Atlanta Rainbow Crosswalks; A look back

00:32
------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total rased: $44,911.00 The total cost was $21,617.86 and group refunded $7,500. What Are The Basic Elements Of An Estate Plan? | Atlanta Estate Planning Lawyer | LGBT Attorney

01:37
Contact http://www.scriberlaw.com/ or call (404) 939-7562 http://www.scriberlaw.com/estate-planning/basic-elements-estate-plan/ Transcript: The basic elements of the most basic estate plans are a valid Last Will and Testament, a Power of Attorney, and Advance Directives for Healthcare. A Will is the core of any estate plan no matter how much or how little you have. The Will essentially allows you to decide what happens to your property at the time of your death. Its also important you nominate a guardian for children under the age of 18. Will allows you to securely know that everybody you care about will be taken of should you die. A Georgia power of attorney allows you to designate a person, known as your Agent or attorney-in fact, to handle your financial affairs and make financial decisions on your behalf should you lose the ability to do so. Finally, an “advance directive for healthcare.” allows you to designate a person who can make healthcare decisions for you if you’re incapacitated. You can also explicitly state what those wishes are. So if someone wants to receive life support or other treatments, they’ll designate that in there. If they don’t, you’ll designate that in there as well. So it gives you kind of the ability to manage your health even when you’re not able to directly do so in the moment. Problems With Probate: What Do You Do About The Bank Accounts? | LGBT Lawyer | Probate Attorney

Contact http://www.scriberlaw.com/ or call (404) 939-7562 http://www.scriberlaw.com/probate/ {TRANSCRIPT} At the earliest possible moment, two steps that need to be taken with regard to bank accounts owned by a deceased person. First, alert the bank about the death and, second, provide the bank a death certificate as soon as the certificate becomes available. If the bank account is in the name of one person, most banks will then freeze that account to secure it. Once a personal representative, such as an Executor or Administrator, has been named, the account will be changed to an estate bank account. This account will be used to pay any debts of the deceased, with the balance going to the heirs or beneficiaries of the estate. There are two exceptions to this: First, If the bank account is jointly held, the other person or people on the account will automatically have sole ownership. Second, if the account has a payable on death provision on it, the bank account will automatically become the property of the payable on death beneficiary. Transgenders: Pakistan's Open Secret (LGBTQ+ Documentary) - Real Stories

53:14
Flamboyant, colourful and eccentric, many among Pakistan's marginalised transgender community scrape a living through dancing, singing and begging on the streets of the country’s economic capital, Karachi. Many others, though, earn money catering for the sexual needs of local men in the city's seedier districts. Investigating a never-before-seen side of life in Pakistan, this film from Oscar and EMMY award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy follows the stories of three transgender people, who each represent a different way of life in the country. Maggie is a prostitute who dreams of becoming an air hostess, while Chahat was abandoned by her middle-class family to beg on the streets. Sana is Karachi's most sought-after transgender dancer, desperate to give up the profession after a particularly gruesome gang rape. Is there any hope for these courageous individuals who want to stand out on their own? With exclusive access, this cutting-edge film goes behind the scenes of the transgender community to uncover the truth behind Pakistan’s Open Secret. No Hate In My State - Mississippi

04:10
On April 5, 2016, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed into law H.B. 1523, "The Religious Liberty Accommodations Act." More than 60 major national corporations and businesses have spoken out against the horrific measure, that would allow individuals, religious organizations and private associations to use religion to discriminate against LGBT Mississippians in some of the most important aspects of their lives, including at work, at schools, and in their communities. Join HRC at the Rally to Repeal H.B. 1523. We will march from the Mississippi Capitol to the Governor's Mansion in order to send a clear and powerful message to Gov. Bryant, Lt. Gov. Reeves and House Speaker Gunn that fair-minded Mississippians support the repeal of this bill. http://www.HRC.org/Mississippi #NoHateInMyState

Problems With Probate: How Do You Claim An Insurance Policy? | Estate Planning & Probate Attorney |

01:45
Contact http://www.scriberlaw.com/ or call (404) 939-7562 http://www.scriberlaw.com/probate/ {TRANSCRIPT} The first step in making a life insurance claim is to contact the life insurance company. If you are unsure where the deceased had life insurance, there are online databases that may allow you to find a policy. Additionally, you may want to contact the employer of the deceased to see if he or she had a life insurance policy through the employer. The insurance company will generally ask for a copy of the death certificate. If you don’t have one, it can be obtained through the vital records department of the county where the deceased died or through the Georgia Department of Public Health. Once the life insurance company has verified the death, they will only want to communicate with the beneficiary of the policy. If you are the beneficiary, they will give you information on how to make the claim, which typically involves filling out a few forms. If there is no beneficiary on the policy, or all the beneficiaries listed on the policy predeceased the person, the policy will be paid to the estate. In this situation, the Administrator or Executor of the estate must make the claim on behalf of the estate. Once the claim has been made, the insurance company will conduct some routine checks to make sure that the policy is current and none of the policy terms have been violated. Generally, the death payout is issued in as soon as a few days after the claim is started.
