This was a class project, to make a faux trailer, placing people we would like to work with, in a dream project. Like so many others, I have been drawn to the magnum opus that is "Neuromancer," by the Cyberpunk author, William Gibson. In an ideal world, I would make this as a 6DoF, cinematic virtual reality project. Now, I just need a studio willing to back an untested director with approximately $150M USD. Hey, stranger things have happened! This effort was pretty rushed. I cannot take credit for anything other than cutting this together, as a lot of the imagery was curated from other artists who graciously permitted reuse with modification. There is also an audio track used in the trailer, which someone else made in another faux trailer for "Neuromancer," which I sampled. However, there was no way to find out who was the original artist, otherwise, I would gladly credit him/her/them. If you know who it is, I would gladly add their credit to this version. It was a pillow where the casing could be inverted to that of a licensed character (Ariel from Disney's "The Little Mermaid, to Saban Entertainment Group's "Mighty Morphing Power Rangers) children had a brand association with. This commercial was for the original "Snuggler." I must make it clear that I did NOT work on this spot. In the other examples posted, you will see that I shot the chromakey production of the Disney and Saban Entertianment group characters -- the rest the companies chose to do in-house. I have this video posted here so that you can see what the end product looked like, as I did not get the re-cut versions with the footage I produced in Florida (the main spot was shot at a soundstage in Vancouver, B.C. due to costs).

What does 4:1:1, 4:2:2, and/or 4:4:4 mean when talking about film and video? If you have ever wondered why your chromakey (bluescreen/greenscreen) pulls look bad on mini-DV or HDV, then this video will explain it to you in a visual manner. It's dull stuff and my monotone voice doesn't help - but if you got questions about "Hey, why does this key not work!" - this will help clear things up for you...for your next shoot! Or, perhaps to prevent a bad chromakey shoot from occurring.

I served as the Art Director, Lead Animator & Composite Artist throughout the entire production, and was awarded both an Emmy (2007) for Outstanding Youth/Children's TV Programming, and a Platinum Ava by the Association of Marketing & Communications Professionals in 2008. I also created the cover artwork for the 4-colour DVD box, DVD face art, and authored the interactive menus for all four DVDs. I must credit another animator, Mr. Cesar Chavez, whom assisted with the animated sidekick "Bob" and several other sequences in a handful of episodes during the show's crunch time.

I did several commercials for them, and this one happens to have a cosmetics promo incentive.

¡Que Familia Más Normal! was a Spanish language Direct-to-DVD & TV Feature (that I also worked on) which was later spun off into a TV series due to its popularity. I was asked to create the titles for the series at the last minute - 72 hours before air, as the original editor's animation was not to the producer's liking. Working with my client in the Caribbean, files were sent via FTP, edited, animated, and sent back for approval over the course of a few days and it was done. While I am happy with most of it, the ending where everyone is in the same shot is not so great. This was because I simply did not have a pro group photo from the series, nor any production stills from which to cut out the actors and place them. Instead, I had to cull a still from the random footage of outtakes, bloopers, and some series' shots, to make the last shot. Combing through hours of footage on a 911 deadline, for a CU of every actor where they were in focus was challenging, but I got it done in time. I would have like to have tweaked it some more after air, but they left it as is, despite offering to complete it free of charge if they provided production photos.

"Maybelline" ("Check it Out!" Campaign)

The talent in the spot is Ms. Teen Puerto Rico. She was hired by #Maybelline to perform in the #Spanish versions of their "Check it Out" campaign. Our Post boutique was hired to do the production and post on them all. These were shot at 29.97, but re-mastered and conformed to 24p, so that they could be laser scanned to 35mm film (ah, the good ol' days!) for cinematic projection. These also played on Broadcast TV, including on programming for major airlines, serving: Latin America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. As is the case with popular/in-demand talent, time is precious. I had less than two hours to shoot three of these types of commercials, all on chromakey. The talent could not make it to a proper studio, and the lighting and audio suffered. There was a lot of roto clean-up, and the entire commercial was re-dubbed by the talent some 2 weeks later. Despite these challenges, she delivered effervescence on camera and in the voice-over ( #ADR via #ProTools) to match, and was incredibly professional at all times. Directing anyone, except for maybe other visual effects artists, in front of a chromakey, is usually quite challenging. Ask most actors, and it's typically their least favorite thing to do. By now, I have easily logged approximately 2,000 hours doing pure chromakey #cinematography (or with partial sets and tracking markers). In my experience, it mostly boils down to fear and dis/trust. The talent is usually horrified because they have absolutely no idea what anything will ultimately look like (even if you have everything boarded, things change!), and often have nothing to react to at all. Again, most any actor will inform you that a tennis ball on a stick is not 'motivation' enough to dream up whatever they're supposed to believe they're doing. The other is dis/trust. If the talent doesn't trust that you're going to do their performance any justice, the forced cooperation strains the credulity of their acting, delivery, and/or timing (to something to be added later in post production). If they're fearless, and trust that you'll do right by what you're going to deliver, you can accomplish things otherwise impossible by any other method. Personally, it is my preferred method of shooting most projects, because since nearly all projects change, chromakey (if done properly), can save a considerable amount of time and money that can be re-directed towards other areas. It also provides tremendous flexibility if/when change requests begin to arrive, and can often deflect a need to re-shoot anything with costly production crews and talent overhead.

This is shot # 49 from the Spanish Soap TV feature: Verano Ardiente (Scorching Summer). This is a typical "invisible" effects shot. The video could not be exposed properly due to the poor colour space from the electronic camera, thus causing the sky to blow out to a neutral grey. For a movie that's supposed to be about a hot & sexy summer by the beach, without a nice, blue sky, the title would seem out of place! ;=) This was one of MANY sky replacement shots I did on the entire feature. Please keep in mind that this was not shot with any type of motion control, data sheet, or even professional tracking markers - it arrived the way you see it in the beginning of the clip. Some of the more difficult matting/keying shots included trees and hair blowing in the wind, in close-up.

I'm not sure if they sell this product in the U.S.A., but "Maslac" is a topical pain relieving ointment sold in the Caribbean. I liked the performance of the mime, and I had fun in editorial with it as I was allowed to do zany sound effects and speed ramps. Regrettably, time constraints prevented me from going further and animating cartoon-ish styled effects just for the sake of it; we were thinking something along the lines of "The Mask." :-) It's rare that one gets a spot you can take a shine to, and this was one of them for me, even if it doesn't scream "look at me!"

Before I mention sections of the work I executed, please note: 99.99% of the time, as of this writing, there is NO tentpole studio film released in 3D that was 100% perfectly shot in 3D. Why? Some shots are impractical and/or impossible - with current technologies as of 2013, to execute with a stereoscopic camera setup. Sometimes, the problem(s) are physical limitations, safety issues, location prohibition, insurance reasons, budget, busted 3D camera that day and must keep shooting to stay on schedule, etc. - sometimes a shot, or maybe an entire sequence, MUST be converted/fixed into proper 3D space. Lastly, #VFX shots on #chromakey (that is, a #bluescreen or #greenscreen setup) are quite often adjusted or fixed in post-production. Typically, one of the two camera streams are selected (usually the "left eye), as opposed to the "true" stereoscopic 3D, when unique issues arise in #compositing After the shot is fixed in #monoscopic format, it is converted into #stereoscopic3D . If that same team did the monoscopic composite, often they'll adjust the composite layer passes in the 3D conversion processing to give it a little more depth. WHAT WORK DID I DO?: #1.) #MattePainting converted from #2D to #3D : I will need to do a blog post (to be linked later) where I show the 13K (yes, you read that correctly!) #MattePainting by #Buf (obviously at a lower, watermarked resolution). I painstakingly converted EVERYTHING in that #monoscopic #panorma from #2D to #3D in #Nuke , so that the rest of the #StereoscopicConversion & #compositing #artists on this sequence had a background in 3D as well. When I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING: the trees, the cars, the people, sides of the building, the various interior stages of destruction (which were covered in part by the rising cloud/beam in the film, not seen in this cropped shot), down to the wires and antenna on the tops of the buildings. If you see it in the shot, I converted it in #Nuke ! I cannot post the #Nuke script due to #NDA reasons, but I will put in my blog - a shot of the entire #Nuke #node tree - though I will need to blur out some proprietary nodes, etc. #2.) #Monoscopic to #Stereoscopic conversion of #Chromakey water tank: Of course, the actor was not really shot in this filthy river. He was shot on a water tank soundstage. I do not know if they had a problem with the camera (as in other sequences), or if they simply shot this as monoscopic for compositing control. The #VFX #TD had a proprietary node setup for faux #warping #distortion & #blur of the actor whenever water "splashed" onto the frame (of course, this was just faked). From there, we did the #chromakey pull and had a separate number of alpha channels. After we had a key pull, we then converted the monoscopic shot into stereoscopic, and then composited that over the pre-made, mammoth, 13K #MattePainting I had converted earlier. Due to the matte painting size, we could crop and create various new angles, despite having the actor in only one water tank shot. Everything was ultimately mastered for #DigitalCinema projection in full #HD ; 1920x1080. We worked on these shots with polarized glasses on a display with a special driver & monitor. This was in stark contrast to another shop I have done conversions for, #Legend #Legend3D #LegendFilms (IDK, they keep changing their name and/or company structure), where we worked in mono, but did our QC review with active shutter LCD glasses.
