Neil deGrasse Tyson: My man, Sir Isaac Newton Tyson was born as the second of three children in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, but was raised in the Bronx. His mother, Sunchita Feliciano Tyson, was a gerontologist and his father, Cyril deGrasse Tyson, was a sociologist, human resource commissioner for the New York City mayor, John Lindsay, and was the first Director of HARYOU. Tyson attended the Bronx High School of Science (1972--1976, astrophysics emphasis) where he was captain of the wrestling team and was editor-in-chief of the school's Physical Science Journal. Tyson had an abiding interest in astronomy from the age of eleven, following his visit to the Hayden Planetarium at age nine. Tyson recalls that "so strong was that imprint [of the night sky] that I'm certain that I had no choice in the matter, that in fact, the universe called me." He obsessively studied astronomy in his teens, and eventually even gained some fame in the astronomy community by giving lectures on the subject at the age of fifteen. Astronomer Carl Sagan, who was a faculty member at Cornell University, tried to recruit Tyson to Cornell for undergraduate studies. During an interview with writer Daniel Simone, Tyson said, "Interestingly, when I applied to Cornell, my application dripped of my passion for the study and research of the Universe. Somehow the admissions office brought my application to the attention of the late Dr. Sagan, and he actually took the initiative and care to contact me. He was very inspirational and a most powerful influence. Dr. Sagan was as great as the universe, an effective mentor." Tyson chose to attend Harvard University, however, where he majored in physics and lived in Currier House. wikipedia

Buffy Sainte-Marie performing "My Country Tis of Thy People You're Dying" on Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest Lyrics: Now that your big eyes have finally opened Now that you're wondering how must they feel Meaning them that you've chased across America's movie screens Now that you're wondering how can it be real That the ones you've called colorful, noble and proud In your school propaganda, they starve in their splendor You've asked for my comment, I simply will render My country 'tis of thy people you're dying Now that the long houses breed superstition You force us to send our toddlers away To your schools where they're taught To despise their traditions You forbid them their languages, then further say That American history really began When Columbus set sail out of Europe Then stress that the nation of leeches that conquered this land Are the biggest and bravest and boldest and best And yet where in your history books is the tale Of the genocide basic to this country's birth Of the preachers who lied, how the Bill of Rights failed How a nation of patriots returned to their earth And where will it tell of the Liberty Bell As it rang with a thud o'er Kinzua mud And of brave Uncle Sam in Alaska this year My country 'tis of thy people you're dying Hear how the bargain was made for the West With her shivering children in zero degrees Blankets for your land, so the treaties attest Oh well, blankets for land is a bargain indeed And the blankets were those Uncle Sam had collected From smallpox-diseased dying soldiers that day And the tribes were wiped out and the history books censored A hundred years of your statesmen have felt It's better this way And yet a few of the conquered have somehow survived Their blood runs the redder though genes have paled From the Gran Canyon's caverns to craven sad hills The wounded, the losers, the robbed sing their tale From Los Angeles County to upstate New York The white nation fattens while others grow lean Oh the tricked and evicted they know what I mean My country 'tis of thy people you're dying The past it just crumbled, the future just threatens Our life blood shut up in your chemical tanks And now here you come, bill of sale in your hands And surprise in your eyes that we're lacking in thanks For the blessings of civilization you've brought us The lessons you've taught us, the ruin you've wrought us Oh see what our trust in America's brought us My country 'tis of thy people you're dying Now that the pride of the sires receives charity Now that we're harmless and safe behind laws Now that my life's to be known as your 'Heritage' Now that even the graves have been robbed Now that our own chosen way is a novelty Hands on our hearts we salute you your victory Choke on your blue white and scarlet hypocrisy Pitying the blindness that you've never seen That the eagles of war whose wings lent you glory They were never no more than carrion crows Pushed the wrens from their nest Stole their eggs, changed their story The mockingbird sings it, it's all that he knows "Ah, what can I do?", say a powerless few With a lump in your throat and a tear in your eye Can't you see that their poverty's profiting you? On Love An honorable human relationship - that is one in which two people have the right to use the word "love" is a process, Delicate, violent, often terrifying to both persons involved, a process of refining the truths they can tell each other. It is important to do this because it breaks down human self-delusion and isolation. It is important to do this because in doing so we do justice to our own complexity. It is important to do this because we can count on so few people to go that hard way with us. Adrienne Rich http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrienne_rich

I've been driving in my Indian Car Hear the pound of the wheel drumming in my brain My dash is dusty, my plates are expired Please Mr. Officer, let me explain I got to make it to a Pow Wow tonight I'll be singing 49, down by the riverside Looking for a sugar, riding in my Indian Car Verse 2. Got my T-bird in the glove box, I ain't got no spare Got a feather from an eagle, I ain't got no care The road is empty in my bottle of desire Daylight is breaking, the sun touches fire I got to make another Pow Wow tonight I'll be singing 49, down by the riverside Looking for a sugar, riding in my Indian Car Verse 3. My dad was a sound engineer. He worked in radio during the '30s, film during the '50s. He worked on the atomic bomb in Oak Ridge, Tennessee (where he met my mom). He won the first academy award given for sound engineering while Mom was pregnant with me. He also worked in the space program, during the Cold War. His job was classified. However, given his keen interest in particular space projects, I strongly suspect he worked on Voyager, Galileo and a good number of spy satellites. He may have been part of the Apollo program, too. His interest was in recording and transmitting audio from space. -------------------- PS: As a radio producer, I've used some of the Foley contraptions, depicted here, for radio theater. view original here: Uploaded by shaggylocks on Jun 22, 2011 http://youtu.be/hZ43UC5tIOY Insider's view of the 1930s radio studio showing the production of dramatic sound effects. We get to see such things as one guy doing both voices in a conversation, an adult do a very convincing impersonation of a child's voice, guys playing cowboys impersonating the sound of conversing while riding by playing "horsie" while reading their lines, and all the weird stuff used to make sound effects. So, a single mom, immigrant from Scotland, with no formal science training, became a U.S. astronomer: the first ever recognized by the Royal Astronomical Society of London. post script: "Women of Science: the Harvard Computers" is messed up, by Windows Movie Maker, in processing it down from project to movie. The sound track pops, gaps and even REPEATS in 2 places: a simple, Kevin Macleod tune: butchered. Gets snarled when I use any form of captioning and, since it's a silent movie, captions are necessary. I'm so discouraged: why try to make more, if they're going to look so cheap, after so much hard work? Why bother/ +++++++++++++++++++ Harvard Computers From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 'Pickering's Harem' standing in front of Building C at the Harvard College Observatory, 13 May 1913. Edward Charles Pickering (director of the Harvard Observatory from 1877 to 1919) decided to hire women as skilled workers to process astronomical data. Among these women were Williamina Fleming, Annie Jump Cannon, Henrietta Swan Leavitt and Antonia Maury. This staff came to be known as "Pickering's Harem" or, more respectfully, as the Harvard Computers. This was an example of what has been identified as the "harem effect" in the history and sociology of science. It seems that several factors contributed to Pickering's decision to hire women instead of men. Among them was the fact that men were paid much more than women, so he could employ more staff with the same budget. This was relevant in a time when the amount of astronomical data was surpassing the capacity of the Observatories to process it. Williamina Fleming Biography Fleming was born in Dundee, Scotland, to Robert Stevens and Mary Walker Stevens. She attended public schools in Dundee, and at the age of 14, she became a pupil-teacher. She married James Orr Fleming, and they moved to the U.S. and settled in Boston, Massachusetts, when she was 21. While she was pregnant with her son, Edward, her husband abandoned her, and she had to find work to support herself and Edward.

From WAM Article here: http://www.womensmediacenter.com/blog/entry/cbs-new-york-uses-baseless-survey-to-claim-women-would-choose-bigger-boobs- QUOTE: Category: Media, Media Monitoring CBS New York Uses Baseless Survey to Claim Women Would Choose Bigger Boobs Over Brains Posted by Rachel Larris | April 13, 2012 Local news channels and network affiliates can run important stories about events and information pertinent to viewers. Or, like a New York affiliate of CBS, they can run the most hackneyed, sexist drivel we've seen in a while. Check out the "report" from CBS New York, a local affiliate. The headline "Many Women Would Trade IQ Points For Bigger Breasts" (the video, broadcast on April 9, below must be seen to be believed.) What is the basis for the story? The report says a "leading consumer website" released a survey that found 41 percent of 18 to 25 year old women would rather have larger breasts to more intelligence. But the website in question turns out to be the link-bait generator CouponCodes4u.com and the "survey" is an "unscientific, online survey." Meaning they could have polled four women in their building and it would have been just as accurate. But considering we can't even find the original "survey" anymore we highly doubt there were even unscientific numbers to trust. Women's Media Center staff called CBS 2 New York and asked where the idea for the piece came from. They cited a New York Post column by Andrea Peyser, who does, at the very end of her April 9 column, talk about CouponCodes4u's survey. But Peyser doesn't even mention it's a meaningless "survey" from a completely untrustworthy website and instead uses the so-called "results" to make herself feel superior to the supposed 41 percent of women who would trade bigger breasts for brains.

Senator Asks For Proof Of Evolution, Discovers He Doesn't Actually Understand What It Is http://www.upworthy.com/senator-asks-for-proof-of-evolution-discovers-he-doesnt-actually-understand-what Wikipedia defines evolution as "the change in the inherited characteristics of biological populations over successive generations." Creationism, on the other hand, is defined as "the religious belief that life, the Earth, and the universe are the creation of a supernatural being." Key difference: Evolution is part of science. Creationism is part of belief systems. In Louisiana, a movement to help get creationism taught in science classes hit a snag when this snappy teacher decided to stand up and explain how it isn't actually science. As the state senator starts asking questions, it becomes clear that he doesn't actually know how evolution works... For those playing the home game, the senator had evolution backwards. His understanding of evolution is that all creatures eventually turn into humans, whereas in reality, it's that one common ancestor split off in a billion directions, with humans becoming just one arbitrary direction of billions of potential outcomes.

Numbness in both ears is a symptom of very serious, neurological conditions. The numbness in my ears is now traveling into the back of my throat. Well, I've been jerked around by the medical industrial complex for a quarter of a century or more about "what's wrong with Rogi?" I was told I have Lupus. Jesus! Then, alcoholism. Well, given family history & how desperately I was trying to mask my dis-ease, yeah, I was damn CLOSE to being alcoholic and 3 years in AA didn't hurt me a bit, except for the slogans like, "Keep It Simple, Stupid" that stank of self hatred. Then, it was multiple sclerosis, but nobody would do an MRI or CAT scan. Then, it was fibromyalgia, which, in my skeptical, dark heart, I don't believe is real, anyway. Then, it was brain injuries. THIS particular "diagnosis" has been the most useful: I've actually learned a LOT from the Brain Injury Association, etc., about coping with my challenges and "symptoms" (dizziness, vision & memory issues, partial paralysis, numbness, ears ringing, bad impulse control...blah blah) So, I go to the clinic today to get a Dr. to approve an x ray, cuz of the whole hitting myself in the head with a board last week thing. He asked re: symptoms. I said I have most he asked about, but have had them for years. He has authorized an MRI. I called them today; the app't. is scheduled from Monday the 9th, in the afternoon. The clinic had it set up for day after tomorrow, but there's a big storm heading in tomorrow night, I'd have to go through the Tijeras Pass (which is scary crazy dangerous on a good day) and besides, they closed the cross-continental interstate from Albuquerque to the Texas border over 6 inches of snow, yesterday! Those inches have barely melted; the ground's going to ice over and there's more snow coming. nope. So, I'm going on the 9th cuz my food stamps come in on the 8th, so I can shop, too. The clinic already knows this is "weather permitting." They're used to that; they get lots of referrals from the East Mountains. Fortunately, it's pretty much smack in the middle of the part of town I'd be in to shop, anyway. So, now I'm back to researching MS. I can NOT describe how I feel. Especially with that jerk, Michael Vigil (former "landlady's" daddy) treating me like a malingerer, accusing me of self-pity & laziness, forcing me to walk from his house to my house trailer on a rutted, gravel road while holding a large baking pan of hot pork chops I'd cooked in their oven, even though I kept telling him I couldn't see and was afraid I'd fall. Merry freakin' xmas. I'll be in a better mood later. Right now, I just need to watch a movie and cry. "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins arrived today. I'll read it, and "God is Not Great" by Hitchens, eat corn chips I got marked down very cheap...bought an entire case...and just be a vegetable. I have plenty of bathing and drinking water, and am collecting snow to melt. WHY can't I get any straight answers about my health?? WHY? MS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_sclerosis

Just telling "CrissRadVlogs" about one of my favorite Asian horror films, in response to her video, "Boat trip around Manhattan" http://youtu.be/0NyDPY44NgY If you're not subbed to her channel, you're missing both the boat and the train. Parenthetically, Japan has one of the highest suicide rates on the planet. Here's the review I'm reading from: http://www.eibonvale.co.uk/strangereviews/asia/suicidecircle.html "Jisatsu sâkuru (Suicide Circle/ Suicide Club) -- Sion Sono Nationality: Japan Year: 2002 Pros: Superb Japanese horror film that is not supernatural, not slasher or crazy psycho. Instead it is that super-rare type of horror that manages to be something else entirely and becomes an important allegory about life as we know it. What one might term painful but necessary. Cons: That bloody red paint!!!"

Occupy Wall St. The general assembly at Liberty Square was electric. Here is how it began. "They showed us their power. And we're showing them ours." We are here because we believe a better world is possible. We are willing to endure mistreatment, if by doing so we can help re-enfranchise the 99% and reclaim our democracy from the stranglehold of Wall Street and the top one percent. We will push back against billionaire Michael Bloomberg and any politician who wantonly tramples on proud American freedoms: freedom of the press, freedom of speech, and the freedom of Americans to peaceably assemble and petition for change. We will overcome the obstacles placed before us. We will not be deterred. We will persevere. Our message is resonating across America, and our cause is shared by millions around the world. We are the 99%, and we want to live in a world that is for all of us — not just for those who have amassed great wealth and power. You cannot evict an idea whose time has come. 11-15-11 4 - Special Comment - Mayor Bloomberg - Countdown with Keith Olbermann View mirrored video here: http://youtu.be/yoG9PmdGaT8

If you don't get replies to emails, facebook, comments or private messages from me for more than a week, please call the police. I'll let you know when I am safe. NOTE: I may be without interwebs at home for awhile, 'til I get set up, but I'll take my netbook and try to post a video occasionally, using somebody's wifi. Article without masthead: East Mountains KOB TV http://eastmountains.kob.com/news/health?page=2 Previous video I edited of TV news stories about Raymond Karbel: "Meet My Neighbor" http://youtu.be/zqw5Dm6mNVM This is my next door neighbor. They had to wear hasmat suits to enter the house, the ammonia was so strong. All those buildings, sheds and vehicles on his old property were crammed with junk. I was there to help him one day; I saw it. He has stolen each of my dogs and kept them for many hours, without telling me. He vandalized my gasoline-power bicycle. He drove a fence post through the parachute that covers my trailer. He threatened to beat and kill me. When he agreed to help me get my goats, he stranded me seven miles from town and I had to hitch hike home. He is the landlord's "friend," so complaining, I've been warned, will get me evicted. The landlord is an ex-cop (and self-described "bible thumper.") He has the local police convinced I'm just being petty and "paranoid" for expressing concerns. He has 2 of those little "pug" dogs and a large white dog. They are neurotic, frightened, anxious, aggressive and hostile. They bark, shriek, fight and scream under my bed window for hours at all times of day or night. He used to have a very deranged, sick-smelling, black dog that would climb the flimsy, chicken wire "fence" he erected ON my parachute, garden hose and DSL line; come in my yard and try to kill my cats. I don't know what happened to that dog. I guess it finally escaped; I haven't seen her in months. He's only had the pugs and the white dog a few months. They arrived here normal and healthy. Now, they're really disturbed. Ray tries to take my dogs any time they get out of my yard. The landlord says he's "helping" me...by keeping my dog for 12 hours, without telling me, and reporting to a neighbor that he did it because I "don't take care" of my dogs? right. He's really scary. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6128XSirio http://youtu.be/jUzQZ1W5oEM

I was in bed, relaxing. The dog was under the covers. I was peacefully playing MineCraft. I was feeling much better. I should NOT have checked my email! Drama queen, claiming a nursing degree, came to my "I Need Moral Support" video to harass, intimidate me -- with lots of exclamation points!!!!! Oh, by the way, genius: not only do I know better than you how to manage my PTSD, brain injuries & suicidal ideations, I know why I'm having chest pains and exactly what to do about it. Your meddling drama just makes it harder. So, thanks, Goodie 2 Shoes, for absolutely nothing. Now, I'm angry, worried and frightened. How the hell am I supposed to go back to sleep???

WARNING: Trigger Alert: Honest descriptions of incest and sexual exploitation. BREATHE! I don't consider what I've experienced to survive "sex." I consider it exploitation, violence and, often, rape. ..... I sent this video via pm to Coughlin with this message: You terrify me. Things you say trigger my post traumatic stress. I was the only homeless woman in that fundraiser today. Someone said I should contact you and let you know what happened to me today. But you terrify me. The things you say make me, quite literally, physically and mentally ill. So I'm sending you this video, privately, so your fanboys can't attack me. Yes, it's creative commons, so my friends can mirror it, but I am specifically instructing you not to reproduce it or distribute it in any way. Because your behavior hurts me. And you do it for your own, self promotion. I don't expect anything from you. I dread even seeing a reply from you. I can't trust you to respect me. I can't trust you to apologize. I can't trust you not to exploit my pain for your own gain. You terrify me. ..... A macabre scene with racist undertones took place on Saturday when Swedish minister of culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth attended a tax funded party for the Stockholm cultural elite. The self-proclaimed "anti-racist" Liljeroth declared the party officially started by slicing a piece of a cake depicting a stereotypical African woman. Gilla artikeln på Facebook Dela/Skriv ut Share on yahoomail Share on twitter Share on email More Sharing Services 340 Photos from the party at World Art Day have already been released on Facebook and are now going viral in social media. The shocking photos show several established left-wing members of the Stockholm cultural elite watching and laughing as Minister of Culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth slices a cake depicting a black African woman with minstrel-esque face. Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth was invited to open the festivities by performing a clitoridectomy on the cake, which she did by slicing off the part of the cake depicting female genitalia. She then proceeded to feed that part of the cake to a performance artist, done up in blackface, his head protruding through the table. The body screams every time someone slices a piece. The events that unfolded at the party stand in stark contrast to Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth's official political posititions. Publicly she advocates a strict hard-line approach against racism. When in 2010 the Swedish nationalist newspaper Nationell Idag managed to acquire enough subscribers to qualify for state-funded press subsidies she immediately took action to change the country's press subsidy laws. - It is distasteful to support extremist newspapers, Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth was quoted as saying in the government publication Riksdag & Departement, promising measures to deprive newspapers with "racist" content of press subsidies. - Although this is a question of freedom of expression, we dont want taxpayers' money to support this form of media, she further noted. Why government funds should be used to pay for cakes such as the one served last weekend, has yet to be explained by Liljeroth. The maimed "corpse" of an African woman has sparked an outcry in social media.

Resourcefulness is the main reason I'm not as victimized by living in poverty as are some of my neighbors. I have a good eye. I know how to use real life tools and online DIY instructions. This is the 1st in a series on Cheap or Free stuff I encounter. Of course, you won't find exactly what I've found, but it might encourage your gears to spin win a possible opportunity is in front of you that you might not have recognized before. A fifty cent webcam without software is worth the gamble: it might work; it might not. If I can't use it as a camera, I can use it for other stuff.
